Support My Cancer Program
About the Program
This program, part of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai, was established by entertainment personality Sharon Osbourne following her own battle with colon cancer.
Inspired by the superlative care she received, Mrs. Osbourne joined forces with Cedars-Sinai's renowned surgeon Dr. Edward Phillips to harness key resources needed to help other colon cancer sufferers in the community.
The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program works to improve the lives of patients and their loved ones by providing at-home help childcare, transportation, access to support groups and patient care services offered within Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The program also under writes colon cancer education for healthcare providers.
The long-term goal of the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program is to establish an ever-widening array of screening and educational opportunities.

Colon Cancer Threat
Colon cancer attacks the body's digestive system, including the large and small intestines. It's the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States among both men and women. Each year, approximately 147,500 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed and 57,100 Americans lose their lives to the disease. The earlier this type of cancer is discovered and treated, the greater the chances of survival for the patient. Screenings, including colonoscopy, can identify early cancer and even prevent the disease when precancerous polyps are discovered and removed.
Education
The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program makes funding available for educational use - disseminating vital information to doctors, nurses and the community.
Special attention is given to increasing the knowledge of non-specialist physicians about the latest treatments, screening recommendations and early warning signs of colon cancer.
Additional financial support helps fund multidisciplinary meetings with colorectal surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, nutritionists and geneticists.
Patient Support
- The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program offers funding to help patients
get through the rigors of treatment. Assistance includes:
- Financial assistance, to eligible individuals to receive clinical care and support services at partial cost (subsidized) or no cost (sponsored)
- Enterostomal therapy services support, to provide nurses specifically trained in the care of patients with colorectal problems
- Dietary and clinical nutrition services support, to make available professional guidance on eating properly during and after treatment
- Support for social work and case management services, to help iron out financial, emotional and family life challenges

"When I successfully overcame colon cancer in 2003 I personally wanted to raise awareness of this horrific disease and established the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program at Cedars Sinai. My charity offers, among other things, colonoscopies and screenings to people without medical insurance (as well as those with minimal coverage), transportation to chemotherapy for patients and nursing consultation to those in need of assistance with their aftercare. I can't begin to tell you how it broke my heart to see other 'less-fortunate' patients who did not have the means for basic care or even someone to drive them to and from their chemotherapy appointments. We continue to be completely focused on prevention and for the caring of the patients themselves"
